Waterline tiles provide the final finishing touch for your pool. Aesthetically, they allow you to match or contrast your pool colour and/or pool’s surroundings. Waterline tiles avoid having a dry, washed out look between the coping and the water that you can get with render finishes.
On a practical level, tiles are easier to clean than cement based rendered surfaces such as pebblecrete used in concrete pools. Waterline tiles greatly increase the ease of cleaning the dirt that deposits on the walls of the pool at the waterline.
Fully tiling a pool is regarded as the premium interior finish for concrete in-ground swimming pools. Mosaic tiles are extremely durable as well as offering almost limitless design and colour choices. Small mosaic tiles look fantastic, are easy to maintain and most importantly are gentle on your feet due to their silky smoothness. There are two main types of mosaic pool tile that are commonly used; glass mosaics and glazed ceramic mosaics.
Pool coping is usually either external tiles or natural stone. Pool coping is the top area that goes around the outside edge of the pool. The porcelain external tiles need to be vitrified which means they look the same all the way through. This is so we can get the tiles bullnosed. Bullnosing is where you round the edge so no one harms them self-getting in and out of the pool. Some tilers are happy to mitre the pool edge on-site.
